Family and Friends

Our Family and Friends Educational Seminars are held twice per year and consist of two sessions in one week, totaling 5 hours. These seminars are good first points of contact with NAMI Toledo for families and friends who care about a person struggling with mental illness.

Without previous experience or training, it can be hard to understand mental illness or know how to help. Basic information will be provided about:

  • Mental illness and helpful skill-training
  • The crucial need for caregivers to maintain good self-care habits and get emotional support

NAMI Basics

This free 6-session class is for parents and caregivers of those with mental illness. It is taught by parents with similar experiences and provides communication tips and insight into the biology, systems, research and treatment. Basics provides learning and practical insight for families including:

  • Trauma of mental illness for the child and family
  • Biology of mental illness and getting an accurate diagnosis
  • Overview of systems involved in caring for children and teens
  • Communication tips for a more peaceful home
  • Latest medical research on mental illness and treatment advances
  • Overview of treatment options

Family to Family

This free 12-session class is for families, friends, and caregivers of adults living with mental illness. It helps participants deal with a loved one’s mental illness and its impact on relationships.

  • Learn coping mechanisms and self-care skills
